TAKEN FROM KERBER – THE FORTHCOMING ALBUM – OUT 27 AUG 2021
KERBER – THE FILM – SCREENING ON 26 AUG VIA LIVENOW
WORLDWIDE TOUR DATES
INCLUDING LONDON’S ROUNDHOUSE IN FEB 2022
Yann Tiersen has shared a new track, ‘Ker Yegu’, the latest taste of what to expect from his forthcoming album, Kerber – out on 27 August 2021 on Mute.
Directed by Murat Gökmen, who created the mesmerising live session video for ‘Poull Bojer’, the video for ‘Ker Yegu’ gives us further insight into the life and the people of the Breton island of Ushant that Tiersen calls home. A sense of place has often been a central theme in Tiersen’s work – Kerber is named after a chapel in a small village on the island and each track on the album is tied to a place mapping out the immediate landscape that surrounds Tiersen’s home – but this isn’t an exploration of isolation, more an expression of being conscious of your own direct environment and your place within it – a sonic encapsulation of the hyper-local.
Kerber marks a new chapter in the Breton artist’s work, one that begins with his most overtly electronic material to date. True to Tiersen’s nuanced and subtle approach, this isn’t a U-turn-like thumping piece of dance music but instead a beautifully textured, highly immersive and thoughtfully constructed electronic world to step inside of.
It is both an evolution of what has come before, as well as a new space to explore. On the new album, the piano is the source, but electronics are the environment that they exist within. Tiersen explains, “You may get this intuitive thinking of, ‘oh it’s piano stuff’, but actually it’s not. I worked on piano tracks to begin with but that’s not the core of it, they are not important. The context is the most important thing – the piano was a precursor to create something for the electronics to work around.”
Yann Tiersen will be streaming a unique live performance from Ushant, where he’ll take viewers on a social and visual journey across the island. Director, Kit Monteith, explains: “I used the 35mm camera as my own analogue system to explore and abstract the natural spaces of the island. The blend of these digital and real film elements mirror the mixed organic and electronic approach taken in the musical compositions. The film embraces their differences whilst seeking to find new and strange harmony between them.”
Yann Tiersen: Kerber – The Film, will stream exclusively on LIVENow from 7pm (BST) on the 26 August 2021, tickets available from yanntiersen.live-now.com
Later this year a worldwide tour will begin in North America with shows in Europe confirmed for 2022. The dates include a performance at London’s Roundhouse, Glasgow’s Royal Concert Hall and Manchester’s Bridgewater Hall in February 2022.
