A CERTAIN RATIO continue their 40th anniversary celebrations this week with a UK tour which completes with an end of year performance at London’s Subterania on 11 December (full details below). These will be the last ACR shows for a while as the band will be heading into the studio to work on a new album, their first for Mute.
40 years after they performed on the same stage for a Factory Records event with Joy Division, John Dowie and Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, A Certain Ratio will return to the newly revived Subterania on 11 December for the venue’s 30th celebrations. Back in 1979 the venue was known as Acklam Hall, and was renowned as a major London space for post-punk and reggae artists. Throughout its different incarnations the venue has hosted performances from the Clash (and the 101’ers), the Slits, Cabaret Voltaire, Pulp, Rock Against Racism events and Sonic Youth’s London live debut. A Certain Ratio returned several times over the past 40 years and this double celebration – 40 years of A Certain Ratio and 30 years of Subterania – will be a glorious finale to a busy year for the band.

2019 has seen the release ACR:BOX, their long awaited collection that includes over 20 unreleased tracks. Out now as a 7 x coloured vinyl set, 4 x CD set and digitally, the box showcases the diversity of the singles, B-sides and alternative versions of tracks that A Certain Ratio have released, but without repeating tracks recently made available through their recent collaboration with Mute.
A Certain Ratio embraced the ethic and culture of the late seventies post-punk explosion, but sounded like nothing else around them and refused to fit in. Highlighted recently by FACT, who said: “Their dub-infused punk-funk recordings have proved massively influential over the past thirty years, and Andy Weatherall has called them his favourite ever band (a prestigious accolade in our estimation)”, the band haveinfluenced generations of musicians – from LCD Soundsystem, Happy Mondays, Franz Ferdinand, ESG, Factory Floor and Sink Ya Teeth.
Their sound is not easily pigeon holed and their influence can never be understated. The band introduced the avant-garde elements of funk, jazz, electronics, tape loops and technology to the pop song, wrapping it in a post punk aesthetic, adding great clothes and the coolest haircuts.
ACR live is Jez Kerr, Donald Johnson, Martin Moscrop, Denise Johnson and Tony Quigley with Matt Steele and James Davis sharing keyboard duties on the remaining 2019 dates.
