“Noise-pop and proper songwriting can live in almost perfect harmony” – The Observer (Liars S/T)
“…another script-flipping overhaul” – Pitchfork Best New Music (Liars S/T)
LIARS’ limited recycled vinyl reissues continue with the release of 2007’s self-titled album, out on Mute on 10 February 2023: https://mute.ffm.to/recycledliars
Liars’ release came soon after their acclaimed 2006 album Drum’s Not Dead. Both were recorded at Berlin’s Planet Roc studios but where the Drum’s Not Dead was a concept album concerned with two characters representing yin and yang, this new album was more direct, and found the band taking a more practical approach, one based on traditional song structures and instrument usage. Veering from “scorched-blacktop biker music” (Pitchfork) to warped dream-pop, the album distils the energy and intensity of Liars’ blistering live performances.
“I’d never felt like a songwriter ‘til this album,” explained Angus at the time of the album’s original release. “If you told me last year Liars would release a record like this, I would have laughed. If you said I’d be playing guitar solos, I’d have called you a liar. We never know what we’re making ‘til it’s made… this time I’m a bit shocked.”
The album marked a new bold transition for Angus Andrew, Aaron Hemphill and Julian Gross and features singles ‘Plaster Casts Of Everything’ (with its Lynchian video directed by Patrick Daughters) ‘Freak Out’, plus ‘Leather Prowler’, which caught the ear of a young Tyler, the Creator, who recorded his own version.
Angus Andrew, talking about the new reissue: “This record is being repressed to recycled colored vinyl – not only to save the Earth – but also so that each album sports its own unique hue comprised from the cast off shards of other artists’ dreams! Will your individual pressing be Plaster Casts Of Everything white? Freak Out red? Or Sailing To Byzantium lime?”
In 2021, Liars released The Apple Drop. Where recent releases from Liars have been distinctly solo affairs, on this, their 10th studio album – released 20 years after Liars’ debut – Angus Andrew (now the sole member of the band) chose to expand and embrace collaboration. “My goal was to create beyond my abilities––something bigger than myself.” The Apple Drop saw Angus working with avant-garde jazz drummer Laurence Pike, multi-instrumentalist Cameron Deyell and lyricist Mary Pearson Andrew to create one of the albums of the year at The Quietus, Record Collector and AllMusic, described by NME as their “most refined and accessible” while The Guardian declared, “After 20 years, Angus Andrew can still get the sweat itching down your back.”
