TAKEN FROM HIS NEW ALBUM FOR MUTE
ANOTHER DAY – OUT 19 NOV
Chris Liebing shares a brand new track, following its premiere on Chris Hawkins’ BBC 6Music show. Listen to ‘Circles’, one of two tracks on the album to feature the singer and producer Tom Adams HERE.
Chris Liebing explains, “Daniel Miller had the idea for Tom Adams and I to collaborate on something for the album. I met with Tom just before the pandemic started, and played him rough cuts of some instrumental versions for the album. Immediately without much thinking, we agreed upon two tracks, and the following day, Tom called me up and asked if I could come by his studio, as he had already written vocals. I was blown away. Take a close listen to the lyrics, as Tom has captured the nightlife cycle of finding yourself in “Circles”:
“Become the dreamer
A star ascending
With open eyes
With open eyes
Until I feel tired
The cycle begins again
I’m caught in this tide
And sometimes I’m rising
And sometimes I’m falling”
As with the whole album and all of the vocalists involved, I am very humbled and happy to work with talents such as Tom. It’s an incredible experience in itself.”
The new track is the latest to be taken from his forthcoming album for Mute, Another Day, out on 19 November 2021. After three decades working dancefloors with pummelling techno, Chris Liebing has a formidable reputation as a DJ and is certainly comfortable with being in the spotlight, but for his solo work he has chosen a different avenue. For the new album, Liebing removed himself from suggesting themes and lyrics to the artists he worked with. “I thought: let’s not burden all these vocalists with my thoughts,” he says. “I wanted to get as much of my own ego out of this process as possible and leave a lot of room for interpretation.”
Another Day sees Liebing once again collaborating with an eclectic mix of artists, including several who were involved with Burn Slow. As well as Miles Cooper Seaton, on one of the last recordings made before his untimely passing, he also reunites with Polly Scattergood for the album’s title track, and Ralf Hildenbeutel returns to produce. Ladan (formerly known as Cold Specks), Tom Adams and Maria Uzor (Sink Ya Teeth) are all new collaborators for Liebing.
Despite Liebing very much directing and driving the shape, tone and essence of the album, he ultimately views it as one rooted in collaboration and one more contributor to the album is Mute’s Daniel Miller, “Daniel’s input was just incredible,” he says. “He brought his modular setup in our studio and he added this extra flavour.” This added element, combined with Hildenbeutel’s silky production skills, the eclectic presence of the guest vocalists and Liebing’s intuitive ear for compositions, results in something truly unique.
The two tracks already released from the album, ‘Whispers and Wires (feat. Ladan)’ and ‘Something Half Way’ have both been given the Liebing club mix treatment, the perfect primer for his forthcoming dates, which include appearances in the UK, US and Europe – full details below.
The new album will be available from 19 November 2021 on double vinyl and CD, both with a silver finish and 16-page booklet, as well as digitally: https://mute.ffm.to/cl-ad
‘Circles’ feat. Tom Adams is out today, packaged alongside Liebing’s Club mix of the track and a single mix with production by Jan Blomqvist, whose remix of the track is set for release on 29 October.
