Due to overwhelming and unexpected demand, Mute and Dirty Electronics announce a new edition of the Dirty Electronics Mute Synth II (MSII), a hand-held synth and sequencer designed in collaboration with the designer and writer, Adrian Shaughnessy.
The first edition is now sold out, and a new white edition is being prepared, pre-orders here: http://bit.ly/143Wwmy
The MSII follows the first Dirty Electronics Mute Synth (MSI), originally created for the legendary Short Circuit presents Mute event at the Roundhouse in 2011.
MSII’s elegant design and focus on usability pushes through a pick-up-and-play approach, and switches and knobs, in conjunction with the touch controls inherent in the MSI, enable complex and infinite rhythms and sounds to be created.
Mute Synth II comes with a selection of works using the synth by artists associated with Dirty Electronics and Mute. The CD features Chris Carter (Throbbing Gristle / Carter Tutti Void), Simon Fisher Turner, Dominic Butler (Bronze Teeth / Factory Floor), Kidkanevil, Dirty Electronics and more. Listen to a sampler here:
Mute Synth II is a statement against MPEG culture and places emphasis on an active participant rather than passive consumer. It is born out of Dirty Electronics’ ongoing commitment to DIY approaches and noise aesthetics, and serves as a catalyst for experimenting with electronic sound.
Additional modules and add-ons make the MSII customisable and scalable.
Packaged with a booklet containing simple and clear instructions, diagrams and essays, the MSII opens-up usability to not only the synth aficionado, but also an untrained enthusiast.
Dirty Electronics will be joined by Dominic Butler to present Mute Synth II at Nonclassical’s event at Bloc in London on 15 November, and John Richards will present the synth at Nick Luscombe’s Bankside Social. Full information below:

Dirty Electronics Mute Synth II additional and technical information:
Dirty Electronics focuses on shared experiences, ritual, gesture, touch and social interaction. In Dirty Electronics, process and performance are inseparably bound and a large part of the Dirty Electronics experience is the workshop with the Mute Synth being presented at the Roundhouse and Sonar, Barcelona.
One of the main ideas behind the Mute Synth II was to consider the dissemination of a musical idea other than through recorded fixed media, and to explore the intersection between sound object and artwork etching. The synth also presents the notion of writing music through electronics and code. Additional modules and hacks allow for the instrument to be customised.
At the core of the instrument is a versatile mini patchbay that provides expansion and modification permutations and a grid-like visual representation of patched parameters using coloured jumpers. The patchbay encourages a particular interaction with the instrument and playfulness. The printed circuit board artwork, white and silver finish, has multiple touch electrodes in the form of small squares that provide a labyrinth of possible connections and resulting behaviors. Different rhythmic sequences are created through hybrid 4-bit binary coding, feedback loops and bit bashing.
