“M83 at its best — vibrant, elegant and unpredictable.” – The New York Times
“22 tracks of horizon-spanning, unabashedly epic synth rock, a double album
without a wasted moment” – Pitchfork
“A rollercoaster ride of glossy power rock, whirring electronica and moody folk-based ballads…as exciting and flawless a stretch of rock and pop as you’ll find.” – The Wall Street Journal
M83 are confirmed to play two massive festivals this year including Coachella and Ultra Music Festival, plus a special show in New York City’s Central Park on August 8th during the 2012 NY Summerstage Season. Tickets for Summerstage go on sale January 20th. Coachella’s 2012 lineup was officially announced last week with M83 landing near the top of bill next to the biggest acts in music. You can catch M83 on both Friday April 13th and April 20th, the first days of the double-weekend 3-day festival, which has introduced a second festival weekend for the first time. M83 will also play Ultra Music Festival in Miami this year on Saturday March 24th, alongside electronic music’s brightest stars.
M83 has added a second show in Washington D.C. at the 9:30 Club on May 12th. And due to high demand, the venue for Chicago’s show on May 4th is being moved from The Vic to The Riviera, a larger space. Several markets are already sold out including New York, Chicago, two shows in San Francisco, Philadelphia, Vancouver, Austin, and Dallas. 2011 belonged to M83 with the double album Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming and the single “Midnight City” topping numerous 2011 year end lists like Hype Machine’s #3 Most Blogged Artist and #2 People’s Choice Album of The Year. Some of the album honors include: #3 PITCHFORK, #1 NYLON, #1 FILTER, #2 UNDER THE RADAR, #1 ZUNE, #4 URBAN OUTFITTERS. Additionally, “Midnight City” year end accolades include: #1 PITCHFORK (Staff & Reader’s Poll), #1 STEREOGUM, #1 Sirius XMU, #1 AMAZON (Alt/Indie Rock), #1 UNDER THE RADAR, #2 PASTE, #2 XLR8R, ETC. Below is a list of high profile 2011year end awards. In addition, Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming closed out the CMJ chart in 2011 at #1, staying at the top for six weeks in a row!
Fan and critic reaction to the sold out fall tour was overwhelmingly positive. The New York Times raved, saying the show was “screaming with excitement”, adding, “While the show changed speeds and rhythms, it didn’t change colors, remaining bright throughout…It was a stage show worthy of a much larger stage.” LA Weekly called the show at the Music Box “the concert event of 2011” and Chicago Tribune said it was “larger than life” and that, “Gonzalez’s greatest gift remains his earnest love of the epic, a shameless desire to go IMAX-big…” BrooklynVegan called it “mind-blowing”.
Produced by Justin Meldal-Johnsen (Beck, NIN, The Mars Volta, Goldfrapp), mixed by Tony Hoffer (Air, The Kooks), and including contributions from Brad Laner (from 90’s band Medicine), Saturdays=Youth vocalist Morgan Kibby, and guest vocalist Zola Jesus, Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming is a double-album journey that takes us to the horizon and introduces us to new landscapes. About awakening, craving, and conquering, Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming pushes into new vocal territory for M83. Here we see Gonzalez test out different ways of singing, ranging from a spectral breathy whisper to a howling scream. “I think it is a reflection of my 30 years of being a human being. It’s a compilation of all my previous music together. It’s a retrospective of myself”, says Gonzalez.
Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming is the follow up to the John Hughes inspired and critics’ favorite 2008 album, Saturdays=Youth.
M83 is Los Angeles based French artist Anthony Gonzalez.
