3 LIMITED EDITION VINYL REISSUES
The limited edition colour vinyl reissues of Cabaret Voltaire’s The Covenant, the Sword and the Arm of the Lord, Micro-Phonies andThe Crackdown available now.
The Crackdown – originally released in 1983 and available here on grey vinyl – is Cabaret Voltaire’s first album as a two-piece with founding members Richard H. Kirk and Stephen Mallinder, following Chris Watson’s departure, and marks a new phase in the band’s career. In an interview from 2017, Kirk said of this era “we wanted to push the boundaries of electronic music, we wanted to place what we were doing into places where it really shouldn’t be” and this album, featuring the single ‘Just Fascination’, illustrates this perfectly. Later that year it was voted #11 in NME’s Albums of the Year.
Micro-Phonies, originally released in 1984, is available on turquoise vinyl. The album features some of the best known singles, ‘Sensoria’ and ‘James Brown’, both of which charted in the UK, and their collaboration with the Director, Peter Care, for ‘Sensoria’ got major MTV coverage and became the first music video to be procured by the Museum of Modern Art in New York for its permanent collection.
The Covenant, the Sword and the Arm of the Lord is reissued on white vinyl. Originally released in 1985, the album is one of the harder and more experimental releases of their “pop” period and features the classic single, ‘I Want You’.
Originally active between 1973-1994, Cabaret Voltaire featured Chris Watson until 1981 and Stephen Mallinder until 1994. The group were inactive for 20 years until – with Kirk as the sole remaining member – the 2014 performance at Berlin’s Atonal festival. An interconnected series of releases – Shadow of Fear, BN9Drone and Dekadrone – followed in 2020 and 2021 before Kirk’s untimely passing in autumn 2021.
